The Padre and Butte varieties of almonds are a small, short, wide-shaped nuts that have a wrinkled surface. These almonds are classified as Californian and Mission. Because they are easily processed, Carmel types are often substituted for both Nonpareil and Californian. Nonpareil has a medium flat shape, light color and smooth surface that make this variety ideal for snacking. The Fritz variety is classified as Californian and Mission, and is medium and plump in shape with a dark brown colored nut.
